Mass–Metallicity Relation for the Local Group Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxies: A New Picture for the Chemical Enrichment of Galaxies in the Lowest Mass Range

چکیده
The virial mass (Mvir)–metallicity relation among the Local Group dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs) is examined. Hirashita, Takeuchi, & Tamura showed that the dSphs can be divided into two distinct classes with respect to the relation between their virial masses and luminosities: low-mass (Mvir . 10M⊙) and highmass (Mvir & 10M⊙) groups. We see that both the mass–metallicity and the mass– luminosity relations of the high-mass dSphs are understood as a low-mass extension of giant ellipticals. On the contrary, we find that the classical galactic-wind model is problematic to apply to the low-mass dSphs, whose low binding energy is comparable to that released by several supernova explosions. A strongly regulated star formation in their formation phase is required to reproduce their observed metallicity. Such regulation is naturally expected in a gas cloud with the primordial elemental abundance according to Nishi & Tashiro. A significant scatter in the mass–metallicity relation for the low-mass dSphs is also successfully explained along with the scenario of Hirashita and coworkers. We not only propose a new picture for a chemical enrichment of the dSphs, but also suggest that the mass–metallicity and the mass–luminosity relations be understood in a consistent context. The Universal Stellar Mass–stellar Metallicity Relation for Dwarf Galaxies
We present spectroscopic metallicities of individual stars in seven gas-rich dwarf irregular galaxies (dIrrs), and we show that dIrrs obey the same mass–metallicity relation as the dwarf spheroidal (dSph) satellites of both the Milky Way and M31: Z∗ ∝ M 0.30±0.02 ∗ . The uniformity of the relation is in contradiction to previous estimates of metallicity based on photometry. This relationship is...
متن کاملStellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups
It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...
متن کاملPulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I
We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...
متن کاملThe chemical content of nearby galaxies from planetary nebulae : NGC 147 ⋆
We report the results of spectroscopic observations, obtained with the GEMINI MultiObject Spectrograph, of 8 planetary nebulae (PNe) in the dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxy NGC 147, a companion of M 31. The physico-chemical properties of the six brightest PNe (Corradi et. al. 2005) were derived using both the empirical icf method and photoionization modelling with cloudy. Different aspects of the...
متن کاملD ec 1 99 8 Evolutionary Histories of Dwarf Galaxies in the Local Group
The star formation histories of Local Group (LG) dwarf galaxies and more distant potential LG members are reviewed. Problems in defining the spatial extent of the LG and membership are briefly discussed. The morphological types found in the LG are presented, and it is suggested that we see continuous evolution from low-mass dwarf irregulars (dIrrs) to dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSph) in the LG....
